My thoughts on technology in education

Wow, technology can be quite an amazing tool, and I think that it belongs in today's classrooms. I don't think that our students will be able to get a whole education if technology is not included. Technology can easily be integrated into curriculum, and I think that students enjoy using it---which obviously helps learning. I also believe that technology should be taught as a single subject at times as well, just to make sure that students are up to date on what kind of software they are using, and how to use it! I remember my technology classes in elementary school, and while I sometimes thought that they were boring I don't think I would know how to use technology the way that I do today without them. I do think that those classes could integrate more curriculum (such as writing, reading, and so forth) into what they teach, however.
I don't think that technology is appropriate all the time. My grandma always tells me "I didn't use computers and somehow I managed to turn out all right!" I think that some things are best left to the basics, by hands on activities and real life experiences. Manipulating something on a computer screen does not always give the same effect! Technology is appropriate when it's adding to learning, not diminishing it.
I would say that I am a digital immigrant, compared to what the students I've worked with already know. It seems like the kindergartners I've worked with know just as much about some programs as I do! However, I know that others (like Grandma!) would consider me a digital native. I think it's all a matter of perspective, and the "line" between digital natives and digital immigrants will continue to move as more and more technology is introduced. The question, then, will be if the digital immigrants are willing to take the steps to learn all that they need to to help their digital natives along!
